The Black Atlantic is the acoustic chamber pop band formed around songwriter and Geert van der Velde (ex-Shai Hulud) from Groningen, the Netherlands.
Their music is a mix of acoustic instruments; repetitive piano, soft-strummed guitars and minimal percussion, relying heavily on vocal harmonies.
It often gets compared to Bon Iver, Sigur Rós or Fleet Foxes and justifiably so.
The band's debut album “Reverence for Fallen Trees” was recorded in the early winter of 2008 in a log cabin in the high peak district of the Adirondack Mountains (NY) and features guest performances by The Antlers.
It was released for free online by Dutch indie label Beep! Beep! Back up the Truck (We vs. Death, Kismet) and German indie label Midsummer records as part of the 'In A Cabin With' international recording series. By the end of the band's September/October European tour (2009), before it was in stores, the album had already been downloaded over 50, 000 times to
to unanimous raving reviews in the (inter)national press and blogosphere
The band has toured worldwide (EU, UK, USA) continuously since their debut at the Eurosonic festival in 2007.
